Code Hunter is proud to call Calgary home. Our office is in the heart of Calgary, located downtown in the Eau Claire district on the Bow River, adjacent to Prince’s Island Park.
Calgary is the hub of the oil and gas industry in Canada. Spokes fan out to financial and commercial centers across our country and throughout the world. We take instruction from clients in Vancouver, Toronto, London and Houston. Our clients’ interests are adjudicated in arbitration and court proceedings from New York to London to Stockholm. Our roles vary on these retainers. We may be instructing, or conflicts of law counsel, or we may undertake fact investigations in Calgary for proceedings abroad.
Our practice takes us wherever our clients’ interests take them. Alberta is our home base but our expertise makes us at home anywhere. We appear in courts across the province. Forestry interests of some of our clients take us north to the strong resource economies of Grande Prairie and Peace River. Mining interests take us all the way to the real north, above the 60th parallel.
Most law societies in Canada subscribe to a program permitting Canadian lawyers to practice in some measure almost anywhere in the country. Even the non-participating law societies make provision for temporary appearance certificates for lawyers licensed in other jurisdictions. So while we most frequently appear in the courts of Alberta, our clients’ interests may also call for us to appear, for instance, in Yellowknife or Saskatoon.
Litigation in one jurisdiction sometimes engages interests in another. Often, for example, a U.S. court will issue letters rogatory — a letter of request — asking a court in Canada to take evidence from a person, or to serve process, within Alberta or another province and to return the testimony or proof of service for use in a pending U.S. case. Code Hunter lawyers work jointly with foreign counsel on those and other inter-jurisdictional matters, including enforcement of foreign orders or judgments.
